Bown (from Birmingham) was known for the Bown Aeolus bearings, which were used in a lot of different ordinaries and safety bicycles. William Bown was one of the first to make these, since 1879. Besides that, they also built their own bikes, like this magnificent example.
It carries the serial number 5789 on the handlebars, I guess it was built in 1890 or '91. With its shiny paint it is a bit over-restored, but the details make the bike very interesting. It shows very refined parts like the rear hub and especially the crank with chain adjustment system. Look at the characteristic clamp to fix the rear mudguard to the frame. Besides: I guess this mudguard might have been longer?
In later years, Bown built motorcycles and mopeds.
